A Veteran Adventure

Sunday 6th - Bull rocked up ready to go nice and early... we were on the road and heading south within minutes. The weather looked okay but it could easily dump on us.

We made good time, only having to pull up around Byron Bay to quickly put on our wets... Lucky we did as the rain came down.. It wasn't too bad.. but we could have done without it... We pulled in to Ballina at Macca's for a Breaky stop.. After a brew and a feed we hit the road again only stopping for fuel quickly at Grafton...

We pulled in to Coffs Harbour for a lunch stop. Then back in the saddle. Things got a bit rough heading in to Port Macquaire as we couldn't find a servo on the highway and had to get off and ride in to town to fuel up.. we must have been running on fumes... Fuelled up and back on the road... Darkness fell around Nabiac.. we kept going and pulled up at Bulahdelah... The first place we pulled in to told us the town was booked out due to some sort of charity ride...

The owner rang down to the local pub and found us a room there... Rode to the pub and the publican not only had a room for us, but was also more then happy to lock our bikes up out back of the pub... We signed in for the room, parked and unpacked the bikes.. unloaded in the room and cleaned ourselves up... We had a great feed and then headed in to the front bar to spend the rest of the night hanging out with the locals...

It was a great day's riding finished off at a great pub, surrounded by great people...!!!

Monday 7th - When you travel with Bull.. All you gotta know is.. 'Up Early'... There's no other option... He dragged my sorry arse out of bed, motel room coffee... then a shit, shower and shave.. Then we moved the bikes around to the front and packed them. Upon looking out to the highway it didn't appear to inviting... Fog... can mean only one thing, Thick gloves and leather jacket.. Gonna be a bit chilly... To start we only rode the bikes to the local servo to fuel up...

On the bikes, heads down, arse's up and the Kays rolled by.... Pulling up just before Newcastle for a coffee and breaky... Back on the bikes again and riding in the direction of Sydney... Almost got taken down by some dick head in a car with a trailer who tried to plant me in to the concrete barrier while he did a lane change... I dropped a couple of gears and wound the throttle on... I think I made it by about an inch... Fucking Idiots..!

We had plans to spend a day in the big city.. but after pulling in to Hornsby for fuel we soon changed our minds when we realised there wasn't much chance of us surviving the peak our traffic with wet roads.. Frigging mad house... Trucks even roll down suburban streets on two wheels at about 90klms an hour... Stuff that...! back on the bikes and looking for the quickest way to Canberra... On the way out we passed a fatal on Pennant Hills road before we hit the Motorways... What a great setup that is now... all Motorway out to the highway.. but you pay for the luxury... tolls everywhere.. still.. saves the hassle of hitting traffic lights every five minutes..

Not sure where we pulled up for a piss stop.. somewhere on the Highway... Toilets broken due to vandalism. funny about that... watered some trees and admired the memorials they have in the rest stops as part of Remembrance Driveway... it goes all the way from Sydney to Canberra... very impressive!

Back on the bike... pulling up at a servo to put our wets on cause it looked like it was going to rain... and so it did not long after, we made it in to Goulburn a little dirtier.. Fueled up.. then headed across to a bakery we saw on the way in... Man.. how perfect.. the place was huge and it had an open fire... a top feed and we got to dry off...!

By the time we had finished lunch the rain had pretty much stopped.. On the bikes and off we headed... Man... how frigging boring is that Federal Hwy... I think I did every riding trick I know of just to stay awake... It's all flat road with jack all scenery... Was glad to hit Canberra ASAP... At least it was more colourful...

Pulled in to the Visitor centre to find a decent caravan park near town.. found it, rode out and got ourselves an onsite cabin... Not so bloody cheap though..! Mental Note: if we visit again, it might be best to research accommodation... a pub has to be cheaper... I did a quick run to find a bottle shop, got some JD's and some beer for Bull... then we kicked back and had a few...

Then we jumped on the bikes and did a ride around town to find some dinner.. nothing easily found in the city.. but found a top place near our Caravan Park that had one smoking hot bar maid... Pity I didn't have my camera on me... It certainly made the night more pleasant.... kicked back with a few beers and a couple of gourmet pizza's... lounged around a bit and then headed home.. had another drink at home and then headed to bed as we wanted to be up early to get to the War Memorial just before it opened... What another Top Day...!

Tuesday 8th - Up early.. Bull time again... Big breaky.. Couple of Coffee's , shit, shower and shave and we were off to the Memorial... We did a lap of the memorial and found an opportunity not to be missed... there was this tank just sitting there asking for a photo to be taken of it with two Harley's in front of it.. so off we went.. Up on the foot path and down with the side stands... Just as I was about to take the photo the security guards attacked.... Well funny thing, apparently
you can't ride or park on the foot paths in this town... what sort of place is this...!?

All was cool though, after some discussion we found that the security guard was an ex-tanky from the NZ Army... Plus he told us of a perfect spot to park the bikes... away from all the other cars... Sweet... Around the outside, Bull and I had a blast, checking out all the plaques, old military vehicles and other stuff... It took about and hour or so in itself... Then we headed to their cafe for a brew.. even in the cafe there is plenty of stories and old Military Memorabilia.

Before we knew it, the memorial had opened... man... what can i say... this place has you thinking... what a great way to pay your respects to those that have died providing our freedom..! We spent an hour or so just in the Memorial.. then we headed in to the Museum.. Not much more I can say but.. check the photos out in my Album..! I think we spent over 8 hours in the place and I'm still not sure if we saw it all...! If you haven't been there yet.. You need to make the time..!

Eventually we had to call it quits.. Backs and feet buggered.. We got back on the bikes and headed out to Robbo's Harley Davidson... Flash place.. Full of bikes... plus they are also very friendly... got stuck there chatting for about an hour or so...!

We then headed up to the big hill... or is it called wankers hill...? apparently it's called Parliament House... we pulled up in what we thought was a good spot... but before I could step off the bike the Feds pulled up in there car to advise us to move on... Nice... real nice... Also appears there not real big on assisting with enquires on where you can actually park to get a photo of the place... Guessing they just wanted us two filthy bikers gone...

We cruised down the hill closer to the old Parliament House building and pulled up to get some shots... funny thing though... for some reason a Fed on a push bike decided to ride near us and then take a break whilst we where in the area and magically left when we decided too... funny how things work... FUCK EM ! We had better things to do with our time..

We headed back to the park and cleaned ourselves up... then we headed out to one of my mum's friends places as it just happened that my mum (who lives in Geelong, Victoria) was in Canberra for the night, she was on her way home from up north with friends.. We had a great night catching up with everyone and being fed a great dinner... Don't remember what time we left... can't be too late... Back to the park, a couple of drinks and then off to bed as we were heading off in the morning to Holbrook, Wagga and hopefully Cowra... Another Top Day.. A big one too..!

Wednesday 9th - Guess what... Yep.. Up early again... A couple of Brews, Breaky.. Shit, Shower and Shave...! Packed the bikes and on the road... we headed out of Canberra via Hall, Murrumbateman and around Yass... Thank fuck I didn't have to ride on the Federal Highway again..! Pulled in to Coolac for a brew and a huge piece of cake... This would have to be one of the last town's that haven't been bypassed yet... but it won't be long... there's road works everywhere..!

Back on the bikes... In to Holbrook... I then got to subject poor old Bull to about 2+ hours of living the Submarine life... Once again.. check out the photos... what a great job the town and all the volunteers have done... it bloody fantastic... warms an old submariners heart to see it all...!

Finished reliving my good ol' days and grabbed some lunch at the local bakery.. Damn good food... then we headed across to Wagga via The Rock... Bull's idea to go that way... Hmmm.. I had enjoyed our time together so far.. not sure why he had made this decision to go the back way.. cause by the time I got to Kapooka... All I wanted to do is Kill him..! God Damned Grasshoppers... Millions... Billions... Trillions... All ending up on the front end of my bike, pants, vest, face mask and Helmet... All cooking on my motor..

There was Bull.. Sitting on his bike with that big wind screen... Hmmm... I wonder if I ripped that thing off his bike and took a running start, if it would fit up his arse..! that screen on his bike seemed to have some sort of magical effect... it was like the Grasshoppers all separated and went around his bike to then reform and splat on me..! At one point I couldn't even see out of my helmet screen due the mass splat's... so I lifted it to clean, just then.. they all decided to head to my face for their little suicide runs.. the bastards.. that shit hurts at about 100+kays....

All I can remember is the look on the Security Guards face at Kapooka... He basically scrawled on a bit of paper.. chucked some passes at us and pointed as if to say GO..! Guess the cooking smell of Grasshoppers was too much for him... Lucky Bull's mate was a bit more understanding.. He even made a brew and we kicked back chatting to him and some other mates for a while...

Eventually we headed off again... some back way Bull's mate had told us... it was a pretty decent run... getting us in to Cowra just on Dusk... We found a pub in the middle of town that was happy to lock our bikes up out back... the only down side was the pub was going through a refit so the kitchen was shut... No probs.. the rooms were good... we unpacked... had a shower and a couple of beers. then headed down the road to another pub...

Man... I think I had the biggest mixed grill in history... It was awesome... then we headed back to our pub.. but found it all locked up... it appears that the town shuts down early on a Wednesday night...There was one pub open.. so we headed across the road... had a few ales.. watched underbelly, then the pub shut on us... ah well... back to the accommodation.. couple of drinks in the room and off to bed.. Another Top Day...!

Thursday 10th - Yep... Up Early.. Packed and off.. but this time we went straight to one of those self serve car wash's.. apparently Bull's not very tolerant of dead creatures on his bike... so I spent the next 30 minutes or so watching him wash, scrape, pry and pick all the dead bits off his bike... I couldn't be bothered... The bike was only going to get dirtier anyway... then we headed over to the info centre to have Breaky.

Bull had told me about the Cowra Breakout...! I thought I knew most of the tales.. but hey, I learnt plenty this morning.. the info centre has a fantastic display.. then we rode out to the cemetery.. Amazing.. then we rode out to the actual site of the POW camp... Phenomenal.. If you ever get the chance.. you need to make the time to visit Cowra... Wow... Wow..!

We eventually headed off... Next Stop Bathurst... Man.. This was a life long dream.... Bull and I cut two laps of Mount Panorama on the bikes... giving it plenty... Another opportunity not to be missed..! Took a few photos and then headed off...

Pulled up in Mudgee for lunch at a Maccas and a local befriended us... he let us know of a great bunch of back roads that would get us to Tamworth..! Off we went... Bloody Ripper... Open road... not much traffic and plenty of speed... before I knew it, it was all over and we were pulled up in a servo at Werris Creek filling up... Then on and up to Tamworth for a brew...

Back on the bikes and aiming for Armidale... not much fun as most of the riding was in the dark and it was pretty cool out... Bull pulled up in front of a pub in Uralla and suggested we camp here the night or continue on to Armidale... not sure why but I thought that Armidale being bigger we would be better off... So we punched on... it got darker and fucking colder... not just cold... ice like..! By the time we pulled in to Armidale my fingers and knees were frozen...

The first pub was booked out.. and they told us most places where booked out... he pointed us down the road to a pub that may have rooms... so on we went... We checked and they not only had rooms, they also had an open fire in the pub...! I was sold.. So they put our bikes in the beer garden and locked it up for us...

We headed to the rooms... now.. this is were it all got messy.. not sure if I want to relive it all... but anyway.. well.. the first room was crap.. two single beds.. no sheets and a spring hanging out one of the mattresses.. so back downstairs we went, were Bull decided to publish to all that were drinking how bad the room was, after the bar chick finally came back up from under the bar she hooked us up with two rooms... one each...

Bull ended on top on this time... his room had a King Sized bed... not real flash but he could at least sleep in it...! Mine.. well.. it was out on the back balcony.. I opened the door to my room and the bed appeared to be a queen.. the furniture.. cracked or covered in shit, slime or dirt... the floor stank like piss and there was a pile of empty condom wrappers on the floor under the wardrobe.. Nice.. real nice..

Then I sat on the bed... who would of known.. the top was a queen.. but the base was a single... my arse ended up on the floor.... Fuck it... I couldn't be bothered arguing about the room... I'd work something out later on... Down stairs we went back to the bar and open fire... some drunken arse local decided to become my best friend for the night and told me his stories at least five or six times... but hey... I've been 'that guy' many times before in my life so I showed him the respect I would of wanted others to show me.... I listened to his stories... many times over..!

We ordered pizza in and had a few drinks and then it was bed time.... Bull off to his room which seemed like some sort of posh suite compared to mine... and me off to mine... I grabbed my sleeping bag and layed it out on the single base... put my pillow and self on the inside and yanked the string tight hoping the bugs couldn't crawl in to the bag... Not sure I got much sleep...! Was a good day... with a bit of a crappy ending..! Ah well.. They can't all be totally top days..!

Friday 11th - I think this morning I was actually up earlier then Bull... Shit, showered and shaved...! We both headed off up the road to get some breaky to fill in time before a pub employee came in to unlock our bikes from the beer garden... Coffee & Breaky done.. we headed back... By know someone was there.. we got the bikes out and put them round front of the pub... Brought everything downstairs and packed the bike... also discovered some poor soul left his ute parked out front of the pub
and some wonderful locals had decided to eat there dinner in the back tray leaving all the packaging in his ute and then having a crap in it as well... there it was.. in it's filthy glory.. awaiting the ute owners return. Poor Bastard..!

Can't say I was going to miss this place... I couldn't get on the bike fast enough and get the fuck out of dodge.. Was pretty chilly on the road... but was good countryside... seemed to get warmer after Glen Innes...

We pulled up somewhere for coffee at a great shop in a small town... Can't remember the name.. but the people were really friendly... met a lovely couple who had a very lovely well built daughter (in her late 20's, early 30's) with huge.... ummm... errr... well.. lets say.... Bull and I fully appreciated her young baby son who had the luxury of still breast feeding... that morning we both wanted to relive our youth..!

Back on the bikes... Next Stop Stanthorpe... Fuel... No messing around... back on the bikes... Somewhere along this path... A bee had decided to flick it's arse around and back up in to the top half of Bull's leg whilst at a very decent speed.. so for the next 50 - 100 kays.. Bull was shuffling around in his saddle trying to sort it out... then we stopped at Aratula...

Bull went on a hunt to find the stinger from his bee... asking me for help.. sorry.. way to close to a man's crutch for my liking, bloke... he had a few locals raising their eye brows when Bull decided to drop his dacks in front of a full restaurant to find that damn stinger... we then had a quick feed... chatted to a few locals... got back on the bikes.. and off we went... Got to my house in pretty good time... said our goodbyes and I started the whole unpacking and sorting out process.... had a tubs and checked out all the photos I took.. which you now get to enjoy..!

Bull and I had a top time.. met some great people and places... The days where long enough and involved plenty of riding.. we look forward to making the time to take a trip to somewhere each year.. I think next year we are heading north... Will be a ripper I'm sure..!?
