Get up close and personal with the HMAS Rankin, the newest of Australia's controversial Collins Class submarines, in this intriguing new documentary series, as she undertakes a journey from the West Australian coast to the waters of Korea, Japan and Hawaii.

Granted unprecedented access that blurs the lines of National Security, SUBMARINERS takes you deep inside the belly of the HMAS Rankin, exposing the lives and pressures faced by her crew, both men and woman, as they live and work within the claustrophobic corridors and isolation of a submarine.

Wear Them With Pride

The Oberon submarines of the RAN defended our coastline for 30 years before being replaced by the Collins class. This video gives us access to the operations aboard HMAS Ovens, during warfare exercises.

It's a tribute to the Oberon class and an enduring record of a fascinating piece of Australia's naval history.

Chops's Comment: This is a very raw early doco which was great at the time as it was the only available insite into the life of Australian Submarines ! Whilst we don't get to see the inner workings... It's still worth a look.. Especially for us old 'O' Boat sailors.. Aaarrrooogaahh !

Sharks of Steel

This mini-series, featuring 4 episodes, looks at the far-reaching underwater world of submersibles. THE HIDDEN THREAT serves as an introduction to the submarine and the life the submariner leads. SUBMARINERS offers a “day in the life” of a submariner and profiles the amazing teamwork constantly performed, particularly in the nuclear sub, where safety is of vital importance. THE HUNTER AND THE HUNTED outlines the true history of the submarine and wartime strategies with the assistance of well-known German U-Boat commanders, their British counterparts and American veterans. IN THE BELLY OF THE BEAST reveals a history of submarines and a basic overview of submariner emergency and weapons training in the United States, Russia and the United Kingdom.

In the midst of World War II, as the tide turns against the Axis, a German U-boat crew is sent out to patrol the Atlantic and fire at Allied ships bringing supplies to England. The submarine also carries a press correspondent, there to report from the front lines of nautical warfare. Meanwhile, the crew's captain (Jürgen Prochnow) is becoming disillusioned with the Nazi regime and with war in general. What starts out as a routine mission is soon livened up beyond the crew's expectations when their boat's surprise attack on a convoy is thwarted by a fast-moving destroyer. Battered by depth charges, the crew must pull together to survive the attacks of their unseen enemy.

K19 The Widowmaker

Based on an incident that was officially suppressed for 28 years. The first major American film about Russian cold war heroes, it re-creates the nightmare endured in 1961 by the crew of the Soviet nuclear submarine K-19 , when an exposed reactor core nearly resulted in a nuclear catastrophe. Several crewmen died, and K-19 's captain had to assert his command when near-mutiny favored his executive officer. This escalating tension gives the film its potent dramatic thrust. It's not as viscerally thrilling as the classic Das Boot, and some K-19 survivors protested the inclusion of inauthentic drinking scenes, but the movie benefits from grand-scale production values, seamless computer graphics, and a compelling real-life twist.

In the battle front of espionage and code cracking of World War II, there remains but one task on the Allied agenda: the capture of a German "Enigma" machine which will allow the Allied naval forces to locate and track submerged German U-Boat submarines. When one such German vessel breaks down after a battle with British forces, a secret mission is dispatched to take over the U-Boat by commando American forces and retrieve an Enigma machine intact. The raid goes well, at first, yet following the destruction of the American mothership and the arrival of reenforcement German ships, the Americans trapped on the U-Boat must use their training and wits to pilot U-571 in order to save their lives.

Down Periscope

Even though this is a comedy it still rates as a must see Submarine movie...! Kelsey Grammer stars as the captain of a rust-bucket submarine who is fighting for his career by proving his skills in a contest against far more sophisticated submarines & ships. Rob Schneider provides comic support as an uptight ensign, and Lauren Holly plays an officer who has to fight her own will-they-accept-me-because-I'm-a-woman anxieties. The film didn't do well at the box office, but it is actually pretty funny, Grammer is enjoyable, and the above-the-water/below-the-water action sequences are as good as any in most submarine films.

The Hunt for Red October

A new, technologically-superior Soviet sub, the Red October, is heading for the U.S. coast under the command of Marko Ramius (Connery). The American government thinks Ramius is planning to attack. A lone CIA analyst (Baldwin) has a different idea: he thinks Ramius is planning to defect, but he has only a few hours to find him and prove it--because the entire Russian naval and air commands are trying to find him, too. The hunt is on!

Chops's comment: Good Story, Great Sub action, but the Yanks glorify themselves too much !!! So what's new ???

Crimson Tide

In the near future, Russian rebels have taken over one of the ICBM bases in the USSR. Alarmed by the prospect of a rebel strike, the U.S. sends the U.S.S. Alabama, a nuclear ballistic submarine, to watch over the base and retaliate in case they launch. While on patrol, the submarine is attacked and the radio systems are knocked out. An emergency message received during the battle is only partially recovered. Captain Ramsey believes it to be the order to launch on the rebels, while XO Hunter wants to wait for a confirmation message. The conflict escalates into mutiny as Ramsey and Hunter fight for control of the Alabama's nuclear missiles.
